Switching from Broken Link Checker
"Broken Link Checker" is the long-standing plugin now maintained by WPMU DEV. If you want to keep checking links on your own server without connecting to a cloud account, LinkTender can import your setup. The other plugin's data is only read, never changed.
Step by step
- Install LinkTender and activate it. Leave Broken Link Checker installed for now.
- Open LinkTender → Health & Tools. Under Switching from Broken Link Checker, click Import settings. LinkTender reads:
- your exclusion list (ignored URLs and domains),
- check interval and timeout,
- front-end options (strike-through, nofollow for broken links),
- links you marked as dismissed, so they stay "marked as fine".
- Let the first LinkTender scan finish (progress is shown on the Health & Tools screen).
- Compare the results. LinkTender shows bot-blocked links as Unverified, and retries temporary failures over 24 hours before calling a link broken, so some links may be listed differently.
- When you are happy, deactivate and delete Broken Link Checker. Deleting it from the Plugins screen lets it remove its own tables.
Do not run both checkers for long: they would check every link twice from your server.
What is different
| Broken Link Checker (WPMU DEV) | LinkTender | |
|---|---|---|
| Where checks run | Cloud engine (needs a free WPMU DEV Hub account) or Local engine on your server | Your server only |
| Links blocked by bot protection | Depends on engine | Bot challenges, 401/403/429 and 999 shown as Unverified |
| Fixing | Edit, unlink, dismiss | Edit everywhere (content, custom fields, Elementor, menus, widgets), unlink, use final URL, mark as fine, ignore domain |
| Email reports, CSV, WP-CLI, product-page checks | Email notifications available | With LinkTender Pro |
Details about Broken Link Checker are as checked on their WordPress.org plugin pages on 9 October 2026. See also the full comparison.
Coming from another checker?
LinkTender starts with a full scan on its own, so there is nothing to migrate except your exclusions. Add URL patterns or domains you do not want checked under LinkTender → Settings.
